About!

Welcome to Miss Anthropist’s Kitchen!

Here is a picture of me on my second birthday:

There are 2 things you should have noticed about this picture:

  1. My mom really liked dressing me up.
  2. I have cake smeared all over my mouth and hands.

16 years later, I still tend to have cake smeared all over my hands because of all the baking I do…fortunately for my horrible metabolism, I enjoy baking sweets much more than I enjoy eating them and exercise just enough to keep the unwanted weight off. I have fallen in love with the process of baking, and just recently, cooking.

I call myself a misanthropist, not because I hate people (that is the definition of a misanthropist in case you don’t know), but because baking is my retreat when my hormone levels are high and I want to get away from everyone around me (you know you’re a misanthropist when one of your New Years resolutions is to be more social with your friends).
I don’t look very misanthropist-like in pictures, because I like smiling. There are no emo poses, nor “I hate the world” T-shirts. In fact, I almost look friendly.

I’m Egyptian but was raised in both America (during my childhood) and Egypt (during my teen years). My real name is probably weird to someone who isn’t from the Middle East. It’s Nourhan, pronounced Nor-han. Turkish for “sunlight” Light of the Sun (sounds cooler that way, right?) I won’t even bother telling you my last name…I’m not even sure how to pronounce it sometimes when someone asks me. I believe it’s a last name that originated in Iraq. You can say I’m fairly diverse.

I love writing. In 11th grade, we had to write a 50-page story by the end of the year, and I ended up writing 250 pages. I might have gotten carried away.

I also love drawing, particularly cartoons. I have so much fun when I draw things for the blog.

As of now, I am 18 and a pharmacy/ premed student. I’m pretty good at it (got in the top 5% of the class in my second year of university! I skipped two grades, in case you’re wondering) and hope to get into medical school one day, but baking is my real love. Currently, due to a family situation, I am taking the year off. I want to use this time to explore the things I love. I want to do more things like cake and cookie decorating, learn more about photography, and just explore creative things in general. This blog will hopefully help me do that.

The rest of this About Me will be in Q&A form, because it’s funner that way and probably easier on your eyes.

What’s that thing on your head?
That would be a headscarf. It’s called a hijab. Muslim women should wear it.

Gasp! You’re Muslim?!
Gasp, yes! Throughout my blog, you will probably see things like “Insha’Allah” (If God wills) “Alhamdullilah” (Thank God) and holidays such as “Ramadan” and “Eid”. You won’t see alcohol or pork.
Don’t worry, I don’t bite.
I don’t blow stuff up, either.

So…do you like, really bake in a hijab at home?
Nope! Contrary to popular belief, they are not attached to our heads. At home I’m as free as a birdie.
If you’re feeling curious and have any religion-related questions, feel free to email me.

Are all the pictures on the blog really taken by you?
Yup!

What camera do you use?
I used to have a Nikon Coolpix for my older pictures but now I use my Canon Rebel XS. It’s professional, but I’m not.

How often do you update your blog?
As of December 2010, I will try to update it at least every 2-3 days. It’s really hard for me to keep a routine, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed!

Who designed your blog?
That would be moi! Don’t ask me how…it’s a miracle I was able to figure anything out.

Your favorite thing about blogging?
So many things. Trying new recipes, taking pictures, getting to know other food bloggers, and sharing with everyone. I also love reading other people’s comments and knowing that they tried making some of my recipes. Makes my day. :)

Well that’s all you “knead” to know for now! *rib-nudge*

Oh, I suppose that’s another thing you should know about me… I’m corny and I love puns. :)

Nourhan, I love this new update. You not only look friendly, you sound friendly… and very funny too! I think misanthropist is such a misnomer for you, I can sense your inner social networker bursting to get out.. Anyway, just wanted to let you know that your blog is fab, I wish I could cook, bake and write as well as you when I was your age. Keep up the wonderful work, and I hope you’ll find your true passion in life!

Keep it up! I know you’re going to be famous one day inshaAllah!! :-)
And yes, I shall be the annoying person who comments on your blog a lot, so be prepared! :-D

    • On the contrary, I love it when people comment! It’s always nice to know you’re not talking to yourself and your comment really did make me smile :) Thank you SO much! Let me know when you’ve tried a recipe and how it turns out!

Love the cartoons Nourhan. The whole design of your blog is open and friendly and that’s reflected in your writing too.

  7. Kathy says:

Nourhan, I am also glad you found my blog and left a comment because it brought me here. Reading your introduction made me smile! I Love the way you describe yourself. Your pita bread looks absolutely fabulous…the way my grandmother made it! I have always been intimidated by the process. Maybe I will give it a try? Looking forward to visiting you often.

  8. I had no idea you were sooooo young! :) You write so well, take such great photos and sound so mature. Oh my. So glad to meet you. Hope to see more delicious things coming out of your kitchen. BTW: Are you back in school?

    • Thank you so much, it’s great to meet you too! I’m really glad I don’t sound too immature in my blog :D I’m not back in school yet, but should be back and educated by Fall 2011 (God willing). :)

What a fabulous sunny blog to stumble across on a wet, cold and dreary London day – and stumble across it I did, through a very odd route. I love your style and the recipes look pretty darn good too! I’ll be back!

Ouhhh MashaAllah. Your blog is so good it’s almost bad. O_o I shall now… browse your archives… and proceed to saving dozens of recipes to my already bloated “Food” folder………….

    ;)

  13. ok, after reading your Q&A, I just have one question for you: wanna be bff’s? ;)

  14. Hello Nourhan..
I found your blog through a friend and I love everything about it..
You are doing an amazing job here…keep it up :)

  15. What a fun and artistic blog! Signing up right now. :)

  16. fatisrecipes says:

I should have this up on my “me” page. :)

You’ve got beautiful photography and great recipes. Thanks for popping by. If you end up making those ajwas, then I know your photos will do more justice to them than mine ever did! :)

  17. NOURHAN! I’m so glad to have found you. Love your blog and loved this “about” section. Thanks for dropping by and introducing yourself on my blog. Much appreciated. :) Most Egyptians seem to shy away from commenting on my blog. I’m guessing that I’m either really weird to them or they’ve decided to take a vow of silence and gossip about me behind my back as most Egyptians do. I’m also quite anti-social and made a resolution to be a little more friendly. I don’t think I’m succeeding so far. In fact, I think I’ve holed myself a little more than last year. Sigh.

I’ll shut up now because from the way my mood is looking, it seems to be that I too can write around 250 pages worth of meaningless drivel right here. Do get in touch and let’s hope that maybe we can make each other a little more social. How about it? P.S. I don’t blow things up either elhamdulellah. Hehe. :)

    • I’m really glad I found you too…like, FINALLY, a fellow Egyptian food blogger! And not only that, but an Egyptian food blogger who writes well and takes great pictures! :)
Also, I totally know what you mean about Egyptians, but trust me, if you look in the right places, you will find some great people…this is coming from someone who calls herself a misanthropist ;)
And I agree, we should definitely both work on improving our anti-socialness together :)

I am in total admiration of how much effort you have put into this, your humour, pictures and of course recipes are so lovely they make this a really interesting blog. Well done, I’m a little jealous ;) now off to start giving mine a facelift.
